Research Task 4:Common Features Of a Title Sequence

The purpose of a title sequence is to make the audience enticed and excited to watch the film and help set the atmosphere, tone and genre of the film. When doing all of this the characters of the film are in some way being introduced to the audience and these characters could be the hero or the villain in the film. Originally Tile Sequences where used to just show the names of people who created, starred in and helped with the making of the film but now they are also used to give away hints about what maybe happening in the film like for example if we see a gun or lots of red this could suggest the film is about death or that someone is dying. The common features of a film editing is to show:

  • the title
  • actors names
  • cut ins
  • settings(establishing shots)
  • soundtrack(to set the tone)
  • idents(visual logos)
  • characters
  • introduce/set up clues introduced in the film

Even though all of these are the purpose/components of film openings the main 3 would have to be obviously the title,to show cast and crew names  and give clues to what may be happening in the film.

In class we looked at a couple film sequences but the one i liked the most was Skyfall as the use of a lot of red and how it takes us through a journey as we see the main character (James Bond) sinking to the bottom of the ocean is unique and accompanied with the song Skyfall makes it it a brilliant Title sequence as the song tells us what the movie is about.
